In the realm of fabulous creatures, the Unicorn stands apart. As painter and enthusiast of high fantasy literature, I found myself struggling with the usual imagination of a Unicorn as a beautiful, gentle and shy horse, appearing a bit weak and vulnerable.

I met a different Unicorn. And dared to approach closely enough to glimpse the deeper truth, see its magical nature unfold. This Unicorn isn’t weak; it doesn’t require our protection nor does it need rescuing. This Unicorn isn’t a fragile muse; it is a majestic force. The horn more a sword than mere adornment.

As a resolute bulwark it confronts injustice, safeguarding not only itself but also the innocent from harm's way. Whilst bearing a peaceful, gentle heart, the Unicorn will defend freedom, regardless of the sacrifices and struggles that may entail.

Skin, flesh, blood and horn magically empowered, yet not invulnerable. All of the Unicorns scars and scratches hold memories of battles won, victories achieved and silent defeats.

The Unicorn stands sentry over its enigmas.

With a solitary understanding of these echoes, the unicorn becomes the keeper of its own narrative.
